ARTSPEOPLE | Australia/Japan

Jurassic Plastic is art for both kids and grown-ups – a fun exercise in creativity and nostalgia, while contemplating mass consumerism. Japanese artist Hiroshi Fuji recycles and reinvents unwanted plastic toys into colourful dinosaur sculptures and landscapes.

The Atelier workshops are for ages 6–12.

* These workshops are for children, however a parent/carer is required to remain close to the workshop area for the duration of the session. Children cannot be left unattended.
* Parents/ carers do not require tickets – one ticket required per child participating in workshop.

Atelier workshops with Hiroshi Fuji (6, 7, 9–14 January)
Help build Sydney’s Toysaurus! Children are invited to spend an hour as artist assistants helping Jurassic Plastic artist Hiroshi Fuji build a giant Toysaurus live in the installation. How does he make a claw? What parts does he need for a tail? What shapes make a dinosaur leg? For the first nine days of the project, children will be able to get up close to the artist and watch him work, helping him scour toy piles in search of the perfect colour, size and shaped toy to complete his mega sculpture.

Atelier workshops with Stephen Mushin | Plastic-Eating Bacteria Hotels (17–20 January)
Plastic-eating bacteria and fungi? Apparently so! Join ecological designer, sustainability planner, industrial designer, hack engineer and contemporary artist, Stephen Mushin on a wildly imaginative adventure to create a very different kind of family heirloom out of toy parts, soil and plants. A workshop of ideas jamming, making and loads of fun!

Atelier workshops with Liane Rossler | Mission: New World 2020 (24–27 January)
Mission: New World 2020 is looking for assistants to help create a new future for toys! Join artist Liane Rossler in assembling the toy team and creating their launch pads to a new future where they will be transformed to bring happiness and usefulness in new ways.
