The favourite son of the Torres Strait’s Mabuiag Island, Jimi Bani calls back on four generations of his family to take you home for an evening of music, dance and stand-up. Hear stories from a community fighting to protect a unique culture and hold onto what matters in a rapidly changing world.
A speck of an island in the Arafua Sea, Mabuiag is home to just a few hundred people and the charismatic Jimi (best known for his work in Mabo, The Straits and Redfern Now) is its de facto cultural ambassador and champion.
Idyllic though it may seem, Mabuiag Island and its people have been through dark times. Jimi’s funny but unflinching show – with his grandmother, mother, brother and son on stage – addresses those dark times with hope, honesty and humour. Based on a story by Dimple Bani, Jimi Bani and co-created with Jason Klarwein.
