Goldner String Quartet – 20th Century Australian Composers

Music and architecture come together in a series of talks and concerts hosted in, and inspired by, the singular buildings of Australia’s most famous modernist architect, Harry Seidler.

The internationally acclaimed Goldner String Quartet perform works by six of Australia's best loved composers:Sculthorpe, Edwards, Westlake, Vine, Stanhope and Hindson. Formed in 1995 in honour of Musica Viva's founder, Richard Goldner, the Quartet has long-standing recognition, not only as Australia’s pre-eminent string quartet, but as an ensemble of international significance.

The Quartet comprises Dene Olding (violin), Dimity Hall (violin), Irina Morozova (viola) and Julian Smiles (cello). 2018 marks the Quartet's 23rd anniversary – their shared experience lends the Quartet an intimacy and musical intuition that shines through in every performance.

Nigel Westlake and Matthew Hindson in conversation with Simon Marnie (ABC Radio Sydney)

Nigel Westlake was born into a musical family; both his parents are acclaimed orchestral players and musicians. He was touring as a clarinettist at age 17, and has wound a career path through folk, rock, experimental, jazz and classical.

Nigel has written extensively for the concert hall, receiving commissions to write for orchestras, ensembles and soloists and has received many awards including two ARIAs, 15 APRAs, the Gold Medal for Best Original Music at the New York International Radio Festival and the 2013 Paul Lowin Orchestral Prize. Nigel has written for film and television including Babe – which won a Golden Globe Award – as well as Paper Planes, Miss Potter, Babe - Pig in the City, Children of the Revolution and the IMAX films Antarctica, Solarmax, The Edge and Imagine. Nigel has been a conductor, composer and performing musician and is great friends with the Goldner String Quartet.

Nigel will be joined in this Q&A by Matthew Hindson, whose works have been performed by every Australian orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic among many others. Matthew’s music has been used by dance companies such as the Birmingham Royal Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, National Ballet of Japan and the Sydney Dance Company.

At home in the classroom invigorating young students, Matthew is also Deputy Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He has a passion for opening the ears and minds of younger audiences to the wonder, and sometimes tongue in cheek abilities, of contemporary classical music.
