We regret to advise you that due to scheduling conflicts, the Guangdong National Orchestra of China performance will no longer go ahead. If you have booked a ticket, we will be in touch for a full refund.
Since its formation in 1949 as the Chinese Song and Dance Theatre, following the Cultural Revolution, the Guangdong National Orchestra of China has sought to both preserve and popularise the music of the Lingnam region of Southern China, including the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan.
Few outside of China would be familiar with the sounds of the pipa, the ruan or the erhu, the works of Chinese opera, or the evocative melodies ofclassical Cantonese, Chaozhou and Guangdong Han music.
While the orchestra’s performances are rooted in tradition, the orchestra is no static museum piece. Artistic director Zhao Jiping worked with seven contemporary Chinese composers to create a symphonic cycle evoking the journey along the ancient Silk Road.
In 2018 the Maritime Silk Road Tour will come to Australia for the first time as part of the Orchestra’s celebrations of the Chinese Lunar New Year to celebrate and welcome the Year of the Dog.
Make a night of it! Add a Festival Feast at Buckley’s for just $30 (+bf) to your ticket purchase. See the full menu here.
